Dilip Vengsarkar, one of the former Indian cricketers, is the new one to speak out about his thoughts on the Indian squad for the Australia tour. “I don’t know how,” says Dilip Vengsarkar on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s selection in the ODI format against Australia. He also praised the new captain of the ODI format, Shubman Gill, and sent him his best wishes.
The Indian team is set to play three ODIs, which will start from 19th October. Basically, the 2nd ODI will be on 23rd October, and the third ODI will be on 25th October. Perth Stadium, Adelaide Oval, and Sydney Cricket Ground are the venues for the three-match ODI series. Later, India and Australia will also play a five-match T20I series.
“I don’t know how,” says Dilip Vengsarkar on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s selection in the ODI format against Australia
To start with, Dilip Vengsarkar praised Shubman Gill as “a very good all-format player”. He also said that when the selectors select their team, they choose the best candidate who has the potential to lead the side. Shubman Gill was recently made the test captain before the English test series. Now he will also lead the team in the ODI format, after selectors took away the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.
Dilip said, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are chosen because of their historic records, as there is no reason to drop them. Both players are fit, sharp, and full of experience. Dilip also had doubts about how the selectors selected them based on their form and fitness, and both of them are out of action since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final.
Rohit and Virat have possibly been picked because of their great records. They have been great players and have done yeoman service to Indian cricket, having won many matches in all formats of the game
It’s very difficult to gauge their form and fitness. But, since they have been picked, the selectors may have checked that, though I don’t know how
This is a great opportunity for Shubman Gill to have two leaders, Rohit and Virat, with him in his initial days of captaincy. Mahendra Singh Dhoni did it for Rohit and Virat; now it’s their time to do it for Gill. Suryakumar will continue to lead the India team in the T20 format after a successful Asia Cup 2025. Shreyas Iyer is back in the Indian ODI squad for the Australia series. The last time he played in an India jersey was in March 2025
