After another embarrassment and humiliation faced in the home test series, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke in the press conference about the series loss against South Africa. This was the second time a team has whitewashed India in the test format at home in two series. First, New Zealand did it 3-0, and now South Africa did it 2-0.
The series against South Africa is more embarrassing. India lost the first test match by 30 runs, chasing a target of 123 runs. To add salt to the wound, South Africa defeated India by 408 runs in the second test match, which was India’s biggest Test defeat in terms of runs. South Africa wins on Indian soil after 25 years. Hansie Cronje did it in 2000, and now Temba Bavuma in 2025.

Gambhir straightaway said that it is for the BCCI to decide whether to keep him or not. He also spoke about the results he got in the England test series, Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup. Everything is justified, but surely, he can cover these achievements with what embarrassing performance his team has done in the two home test series. Unable to win either of them, and not even a single wicket.
t is for the BCCI to decide. I have said this before as well, Indian cricket is important, I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England, won the Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning.
We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don’t blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won’t do it going forward
You don’t need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket. What we need is tough characters with limited skills. They make good Test cricketers
He said that he needs tough characters with limited skills to play test cricket. The coach is the one who decides and has a major say on the team and the players who should play. First of all, these players do not have tough characters. So why were they selected by the coach in the first place? In the past seven or eight years, this is the lowest that the Indian cricket team has seen in the test format. India has lost 10 of 18 matches under Gambhir as head coach so far.
Surely what’s done can’t be forgotten. The players now need to move on, and the coach also needs to figure out the mess. Now India plays a three-match ODI series followed by a five-match T20I series against South Africa. Now there is no test cricket for the Indian team for almost a year. They return in August 2026, playing a two-match series against Sri Lanka.
